The chance of catching Babesiosis can be reduced a lot by staying out of areas known to have ticks. But, whenever you have to go to such places, take extra precaution and do not let the tick stay on your body for a day or more.

Babesiosis, or Babesia, is a parasitic infection transmitted to humans through bites of infected ticks. It is brought on by Babesia microti and Babesia divergens protozoa, which can lead to dangerous complications - especially if you have preexisting health issues. In order to lessen contracting Babesiosis, use caution by following these guidelines:

Stay away from tick-infested areas

Babesiosis is carried by ticks, particularly deer ticks. The first and most practical way to defend yourself from being infected with this disease is to stay away from tick-infested areas. You also need to be aware that ticks are usually found in grassy, wooded areas, especially during late spring, summer, and early fall.

Exercise special care anytime you are planning to be outside

Babesiosis infection is extremely rare, so don't stop doing all your favorite outdoor activities like camping, hiking or fishing out of fear. As long as the following precautionary measures have been undertaken, you will remain free of ticks while enjoying outdoor activities.

* Make sure you cover your body well so the ticks do not get onto your exposed skin. Wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, hats, socks and closed-in shoes or boots are also things you can do for added protection against possible infection. If you have long hair, tie it back and tuck it in your hat to avoid ticks from crawling through it. It is also a good idea, to tuck the ends of your pant legs into your socks in order to protect your skin. Light-colored clothes are also ideal when going outdoors in order to easily find ticks that have stuck on your clothing.

* Keep ticks away by applying repellents on your skin and clothes. Insect repellents containing DEET may be applied to both skin and clothing in order to keep ticks off of you and your belongings. In order to repel and kill ticks that get attached to clothes and shoes, you can also use products that contain permerthrin, a chemical used in insecticides. This treatment, however, should not be used on your skin. Make sure you carefully read the application before using these products.

*Check for ticks on your clothes from time to time while outdoor to stop them from crawling and getting to your skin.

Do not let any tick stay for a day or more on your skin

The parasite causing Babesiosis can only be transmitted if the tick remains attached to your skin for about 24-36 hours. Examining your body with a large mirror is necessary after participating in any function outdoors. Taking a shower and washing those areas that are especially vulnerable to ticks such as the scalp, the back of your neck, ears, armpits, navel, legs, pits of your knees, and in between your toes is another thing you can do to avoid possible infection. Immediately remove any ticks found on your skin to avoid being infected with Babesiosis.

Though there is usually no Babesia or Babesiosis outbreak, everybody should still be cautious about it. It can be very harmful

to the body if infected and not diagnosed and treated right away. As is the case with many diseases, prevention through the right steps, is the key to protecting you from this infection.
