You've spent months, perhaps years toiling away in your basement writing while all your friends were out having the times of their lives. You've lived with the anguish of carpel tunnel syndrome as well a bad back, sore shoulders, and strained eyes, but it's finally finished. You've completed your manuscript, and your ready for the next step.

The first thing you'll realize is that although there seem to be billions of agents out there, most of them are only looking for novelists who have already been published. Even though this may be discouraging at first, there are plenty of ways around this seemingly insurmountable problem.

Before you start shopping your book around, you'll need to create a powerfully compelling description in about two paragraphs of your entire novel. Agents are inundated with proposals all day long, and you've got to make yours sound better than all the rest. The agent is looking for something that they can quickly get a book deal with, so try to make it as easy on them as possible. That means make your book sound like something plenty of people will want to buy.

The second thing to do is make sure first few pages or chapters really grab the reader by the throat. Often times an agent will ask to read the first chapter to see if your novel is worth pursuing. If you can afford it, have the first couple chapters looked at by a professional editor. These first few pages can make or break your chances with any given agent.

Most importantly, it's crucial to realize that finding an agent, and getting published, especially for a first time novelist, is purely a numbers game. There's a lot of competition today, and agents are hungry for books that they know will sell. Plenty of websites have extensive listings of agents, and most of them will accept queries by email. This means you could easily send out twenty or thirty queries a day. Keep this up for a few months, and your bound to find somebody that's interested.

Just like Edison once said, this is one percent inspiration, and ninety nine percent perspiration. So long as you never give up, your bound to find an agent that believes in your work, and a subsequent book deal. And while you're sending out all those emails every day, you'll have plenty of time to get started on your next work.
