Sales is definitely a tough job to be in. Whether you run your own business, or work for a large corporation, sales can make or break any operation. When sales are good, everybody's happy. So what exactly is this thing called rapport? When you are with somebody, and you feel comfortable with this person, and you feel that you can trust them, and kind of let down your natural defenses, then you are in rapport. When people speak of "hitting it off," they are describing a quick building of rapport. If you were in a strange town, where people didn't speak English, and you saw somebody wearing a T-shirt with the name of your home town on it, you would likely feel a good deal of rapport with this person, especially if they looked like you and spoke natural English.


The question is, how do you create this with somebody you've just met, know little about, and is already being defensive, since you are obviously going to try and sell them something? You can try traditional methods, like asking about their hobbies, and saying how great they are, but the truth is those methods are shallow and superficial, and won't get you very far. You've got to develop true, unconscious rapport.

The easiest and quickest way to do this is to simply match the way they are sitting or standing. If their legs are crossed, you cross your legs. If they cross their arms, then you cross yours. Also, matching their rate of speech is a great way to establish rapport as well. If they speak slow, so do you. If they speak fast and their tonality is all over the place, you do the same.

Sometimes you can feel like they are going to get angry at copying them, but this rarely happens. Most people have got too much on their to notice that somebody is crossing their legs like they are. Even if they do suspect something, they won't likely say anything, or have any idea why you are doing it. Make sure to give it five or ten minutes, during some basic chit chat, before moving on to the sales material. You need to let that feeling of safety and comfort develop naturally in them before you get started.


The longer you do this, of course, the more effect it will have. One way to notice this in other people is to look around next time you're out and about and check couples who are sitting in coffee shops or what not. If their body language is matched pretty well, they are getting along fine. If their body language is completely mismatched, then they aren't getting along very well at the moment. And when you start using this in your sales, you will notice a dramatic increase in your income.
