Doesn't the idea of relaxing with a tasty bottle of wine sound elegant? And the thought of being able to drink on a bottle of wine that you produced yourself does sound even better. It's not as complex as you might think to plant and grow a good grape vine that will provide grapes for you to make wine with.

How large should your individual vineyard be? That's something you'll have to determine, but a fantastic place to begin is with twelve vines or so. By planting some grape vines, you'll be able to produce sufficient fruit for a five gallon batch of homemade wine. You'll begin by getting year old vines from a local nursery. These will be dormant grape vines that were cultivated by the nursery in their grounds. You need to buy these dormant vines in early spring while they're still dormant. This gives you time and energy to get them planted before the spring rains get started and they get up and start to grow once again. It's also very important to get plants back in the ground before they come out of being dormant for the winter. And having them planted just before the early new season rains will give them a little time to settle in before the growing season starts. If you cannot plant them right away for some reason, keep in mind to keep the plant's roots moist by spraying them with water.

Planting grape vines is a quite simple process. You start by excavating a ditch that's large enough to match the full root structure in it without difficulty. Then maintain the grape vine vertical while you fill it in with soil. You should make sure the entire root structure is protected, but provide any buds on the vine to continue to be exposed to the atmosphere. Tap the soil down lightly to assure stability. You can also build a slight slope towards the grape vine so that water will run to the roots when it rains. This also can make it less difficult to water them and keep the soil wet.

When your grape vines begin to grow you must ensure the soil around them stays slightly moist. This can be determined by your specific location and the amount rain you've received lately, but don't be afraid to provide them a little extra water. This is certainly true if your soil is very sandy, as the water will run through sandy soil very quickly. Just check on the soil situation every day, and if it's dry, give them some water. Assuming that there's no standing water on your grape vines, extra water won't have any dangerous consequences.

It's also critical to make sure the grape vines you have planted get lots of sun rays. Pick an open area where they can get sun all day long, and refrain from places that obtain a lot of shadows covering them. These open sections will also normally have superior air flow, which your grape vines also require. Photosynthesis is what lets your grape vines to generate sugar inside of the grapes, and this sugar is critical to making wine. Sugar is what turns into alcohol during the fermentation process.

With a little preparation and hard work, you can easily turn that dream of making your own wine into a reality. And the quality of wine you produced yourself is usually just a bit superior than wine you buy.
