So you're thinking about a big project around the house. Perhaps you plan on redoing the tiling on your kitchen floor, or putting in a new set of cabinets in your garage. Maybe even installing one of those space saving closets in your bedroom. But there's one nagging question that is in the back of your mind that you absolutely must confront before you begin. Should you do it yourself, or hire somebody?

Sure, it would feel great to finish it, step back and boast to your friends of your handy work. It feels good to be known as the guy who can do it all himself without needing hired guns. But on the other hand, it's pretty embarrassing to have a half completed projected, covered in plastic, and not be able to answer the inevitable question: "When are you going to finish this?"

So in order to decide which path to take, the do it yourself angle, or the hired gun method, ask yourself a couple of questions. Be honest, and you may save yourself some time, money, and embarrassment. Of you could give yourself the confidence that you need to start your project and finish it up in a couple of weekends. Who knows?

You've got to ask yourself the tough, but obvious question. Do you really know what you're doing? Have you done anything like this before? If you are planning on figuring it out along the way, you'll likely run into some difficulties that may bring your project to a screeching halt. If, on the other hand, you've done some smaller jobs around the house with no problem, and you've overcome similar difficulties in the past, then you're probably ready to go ahead and start swinging your hammer.

If you're unsure about getting some professionals involved then you can start out by getting some estimates. Who knows, it may be a lot cheaper than you imagine, and you won't have to get your hands dirty. You can also ask some people who have done similar jobs how it went. Ask their advice for your particular job, and see if they think it will go OK for you. If they say you can handle it, you probably can. But if they say they'd rather hire a professional themselves, then you should too.

Despite how good it feels to do it yourself, there's no shame in hiring somebody. It may cost a few extra dollars, but it will certainly save time, and it will save you plenty of grief. However, if you're confident you can do it yourself based on your past experiences, then go ahead and get to work.
