Nakhon Si Thammarat is a municipality located in the south eastern Thailand and is bordered by Malaysia's East Coast. Nakhon Si Thammarat is a busy border municipality with a flourishing cross-border trade in timber, sculptures and farm produce. Nakhon Si Thammarat has a population of around 100,000 and shares its municipality with nearby provinces.
Nakhon Si Thammarat is considered the oldest municipality in Southern Thailand and was previously part of the Trambralinga province of Southen China. Modern day occupants are dark-skinned showing that the fair skinned Chinese abandoned the area many centuries ago. At one point it was among the dominant states in South East Asia and rivaled the Kyhmer empire of Angkor in numbers and political influence.
Wat Pra - Wat pra is a famous temple in Nakhon Si Thammarat and is known as the most important temple in southern Thailand. Numerous novice and senior monks pilgrimage in this temple to offer their respects to Lord Buddha. It is thought that Buddha himself went to this location to give teachings to the villagers. This temple was featured on the now defunct 25 statang coin.
The City Wall - This is another point of interest for visitors interested in ancient architecture. This wall structure was used to protect the town from Malay and Burmese intruders during the late 17th century - but no expense was spared in the ornate and robust construction.
The Museum - Situated on Rachadamnoen Road, Nakhon Si Thammarat museum is known for it's bronze drums and Vietnamese Cultural sections. This museum is usually overlooked by tourists to Nakhon Si Thammarat.
Getting There
Get an express train coming from central Bangkok departing mondays to fridays at 5:50 PM and 7:15 PM. Services during the weekend are intermittent.
