People that know me know that I love to read and if you've been following the blog recently you would have read my review of the book 'Content Rules' which is part of the new rules of marketing series. The title is appropriate and true. Content does rule, and newspapers have been saying it for years. It's also true on the internet however many business owners tend to forget that, instead focusing only on the aesthetics of their website. Of course, how your website looks is important, however what is just important, if not more so, is the results that your website is generating.

Know me - I read. Been reading Content Rules. Check out blog here. Content is king. I belive newspapers used to say that. It's true on the internet. Business owners want their websties to look good, of course image is important. But results are important too. First let's look at what results are important on a website:

Visitors
How many people actually visit your website.
Bounce Rate
How many people leave your website as quickly as they came. This is in most cases due to you not providing the relevant information that they're looking for.

Average Time Spent on Website
You want your website visitors to spend as much time on your website if possible because this means they're listening, watching and reading to what you have to say. When these visitors do decide to go ahead with a purchase in the future you will be top of mind for them.

Visitor Loyalty
If you have so much content that visitors book mark your page or return later this is an added benefit too.
Google Analytics can help you track the metrics mentioned above in a visually friendly panel and the best part is it's free.

Despite what you may believe. Having a good looking website will ensure none of those. If you run a business there will be three main types of people who will come to your website:

Transactional, ready to buy
Customers ready to buy will fall into this category and probably account for most of the business you receive from online. You've been in this situation many times yourself. Perhaps you're looking for a florist, type in 'florist sydney' into Google, click on the first result that catches your fancy and dial the number.

Just Browsing/Researching
This is when a customer is not ready to buy and is doing the research to decide on the best option to solve his problem. A query in this phase may be 'how to clean green pool' for example. This is where the content of your website will become important. Don't forget!

Everyone Else
These are visitors that come to your website that don't fall into those two categories and may involve your vendors, family friends or random internet lurkers. You don't have to worry about these and hopefully they will only be a small percentage.

Most business websites are not built with the research/just browsing visitor segment in mind. Instead most business websites still stand as simple brochures explaining what the business does and how to contact them. The solution to this is to create content that is relevant to your potential clients. Having relevant, high quality content will ensure that your clients will stay on your website. There are many types of content you can produce including blog posts, ebooks, videos, podcasts and the like.

The Content Management System

As you are most likely not a web designer, you may think updating your website constantly with new pages will cost you a pretty penny to pay for the web designer. Fortunately that is not the case. You see there is a technology out there called CMS, or Content Management System for short. This allows you to edit your website content, including adding pages and blog posts with absolutely no web design experience. All you need to do is log in to a back end panel and you're away editing the content you need. No more greedy web designers wanting you to pay them thousands for simple updates.
The Wordpress dashboard, shown in the image above, will allow you to add pages and other content to your website without needing to know anything about web design.

There are many CMS systems out there, the most popular being Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal. At Head Studios we use Wordpress however in essence the many functions are the same across the platforms.

With a CMS system set up by your web designer you can get to work creating high quality content that will be indexable by Google, but then again that is a whole different story!
